Every Product Begins with a Question

Every Product Begins with a Question

Every enduring brand begins with an idea. GreenKraft began with an observation.

GreenKraft's story begins with designer Neelam Chhiber. During her time at the National Institute of Design, she worked closely with rural producers across India and witnessed something remarkable: generations of knowledge about natural materials that had never found the markets or recognition they deserved.

Working with bamboo, banana bark and forest leaves was second nature to many communities. Their understanding of these materials had been shaped over decades through observation, experience and everyday use. What they lacked was not skill or ingenuity, but access to fair markets, strong business systems and the opportunity to build enterprises around their knowledge.

That insight changed everything.

It became clear that design alone could not transform livelihoods. Beautiful products were only one part of the equation. Producers also needed reliable market access, transparent costing, quality systems, product innovation, and businesses that could compete confidently in contemporary markets. Most importantly, they needed to become owners of the value they created, not just contributors to someone else's enterprise.

That belief became the foundation of GreenKraft.

Established as a producer-owned enterprise and incubated by Industree Foundation, GreenKraft was built to connect nature-based materials, thoughtful design and women-led enterprises through a market-driven approach. From the very beginning, the vision was not to preserve tradition as a relic of the past, but to demonstrate that generations of material knowledge could thrive in a modern economy.

Today, GreenKraft works with women-led producer enterprises across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Odisha to create contemporary products for homes, workplaces and businesses. Our collections include accessories, planters, home decor, gifting solutions and biodegradable disposables, each designed to meet the expectations of modern consumers while staying true to the strengths of the materials from which they are made.

Those materials are at the heart of everything we do.

Bamboo is valued for its strength, flexibility and versatility. Banana bark, often left behind after harvest, is transformed into products with distinctive texture and durability. Sal and Siali leaves, collected only after they have naturally fallen, become biodegradable alternatives designed for everyday use. Each material has been used by local communities for generations, and each continues to reveal new possibilities through contemporary design and creative production.

For us, innovation does not begin by replacing natural materials with something new. It begins by asking how existing materials can perform better, last longer and find relevance in changing lifestyles. Design plays an important role in this process, but so do production planning, material research, quality assurance and continuous improvement. Every product is refined with the same objective: to create something that is functional, reliable and made to the highest standards.

This is what we mean by creative production.

It is a process where design, material knowledge and organised production work together. Designers bring an understanding of evolving lifestyles and market expectations. Producer enterprises contribute generations of practical knowledge about natural materials and production techniques. Together, they create products that are contemporary in design, rooted in local knowledge and ready for global markets.

Equally important is the way GreenKraft is organised.

The women who produce GreenKraft collections are members of producer-owned enterprises. They are active participants in planning, quality management, production systems and business growth. As these enterprises grow stronger, they build the confidence and capability to respond to new opportunities, strengthen customer relationships and expand into new markets.

This model changes the way value is created.

Rather than separating design, production and enterprise, GreenKraft brings them together within a shared ecosystem where growth benefits the people closest to production. It creates businesses that are more resilient, products that are more consistent and communities that are better equipped to shape their own futures.

As consumer expectations evolve, so does GreenKraft.

Today's customers are looking beyond aesthetics. They want products that perform well, are made responsibly and reflect the values of the brands they support. We believe that meeting these expectations requires more than sustainability claims. It requires strong design, dependable quality, innovative use of materials and transparent production systems.

That is why GreenKraft is as much about enterprise as it is about products.

Every collection represents the coming together of renewable natural materials, contemporary design and women-owned enterprises. Every order supports businesses that continue to invest in quality, innovation and growth. Every product demonstrates that commercial success and social impact do not exist in opposition but can strengthen one another.

The question that inspired GreenKraft continues to guide us today.

What happens when the world's oldest material knowledge meets contemporary design, organised enterprise and global markets?

We believe the answer is visible in every GreenKraft product. It is not simply an object made from natural materials. It is the outcome of thoughtful design, creative production and a business model that ensures value is shared by the people who create it.

That is the future GreenKraft set out to build. And it is only just beginning.
